Favorite Artist:

There are too many! I love Helen Frankenthaler’s color field pieces, Edward Hopper’s realist paintings of rural and urban American scenes, Salvador Dali for his imagination, and Frida Kahlo for the pain and passion behind her self portraits. I’m currently reading a translated version of Frida’s illustrated journal, and it’s truly remarkable.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

My first love is acrylic paint, but I have been working mostly with watercolor and colored pencil for the past several years, and I really enjoy those as well.

Julianne | Instructor

Favorite Artist:

Agnes Martin for the peaceful atmosphere of her paintings!

Favorite Medium/Subject:

My favorite mediums are Oil and Acrylic Paintings of landscapes because I like trying to capture nature’s colors!

Matty | Studio Manager

Favorite Artist:

I’m captivated by Mark Maggiori’s western landscapes. As a landscape artist myself, I often try to study his remarkable cloud formations and brilliant use of color and light in his realistic scenes. His paintings feature striking landscapes, cowboys and, Indigenous peoples—creating a bight and nostalgic feel for the American West that lives today in southwest culture still. He has a fascinating balance of techniques: loose, impressionistic brushstrokes in the natural elements contrasted with precise detailing in his subjects. His artwork creates such a delightful variety of colors and brush strokes for any viewer.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

My favorite medium/subjects are oil and acrylic! I love to paint in lots of layers, and use bright, striking colors. I love the textures you can create with both mediums as well. But truly I am happy with anything I can get my hands on to express creativity.

Favorite Artist:

Definitely Vincent Van Gogh, the colors and motion in Van Gogh’s pieces are captivating; he is absolutely one of the most brilliant painters that ever lived!

Favorite Medium/Subject:

My favorite mediums are acrylic and watercolor. Watercolor has proven to be a challenging medium but I love, love, LOVE the end results! I truly enjoy painting people and animals – it’s way too much fun to see your paintings come alive, especially of subjects that you know!

Tara | Instructor

Favorite Artist:

I am deeply inspired by the iconic narrative style of Norman Rockwell along with the colors and impressionistic style of Chris Long’s landscapes.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

I am an avid painter (acrylic, oils, watercolor) and ceramic artist but evolving my teaching craft and impacting young artists is my proudest work.

Chelsea | Instructor

Favorite Artist:

Leonid Afremov. I love how his paintings emphasize light, nature, and simplicity of every day life with vibrant colors and simple strokes. His work shows everyone how colorful this beautiful world it, while inspiring young artists to use every color on their palette.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

Oil paint is my favorite medium to use when I want to create portraits, still ife, nature, and everything in between. I love the way oil paint moves and blends on a canvas. With oils, I can take my time and meditate thoughout the process, channel my emotions into the piece, and feel proud of the finished product. I enjoy the subject of Realism because I love capturing the colors, textures, and shapes of things I find beautiful. Watercolor. It’s so satisfying in how the brushes move the pigment with the water on the paper.

Julia | Instructor

Favorite Artist:

My favorite artist is John Singer Sargent- not so much because of what he painted, but how he painted. I really admire the way he used such loose expressive brushstrokes, yet when you step back, everything looks so refined and realistic. There’s a kind of effortless mastery in his work that I find inspiring.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

My favorite medium is oil paint- I love the timeless quality and how beautifully is blends. But I’m also a pretty simple person, and honestly, just having a graphite pencil and sketchbook brings me a lot of joy too. My main subjects vary from animals to human portraits and landscapes.

Claire | Art Assistant

Favorite Artist:

My favorite artist is Jan Fearnley. I love her illustrative style and how love-filled her art is!

Favorite Medium/Subject:

My favorite medium is watercolor! I have learned to embrace the medium as it can be unpredictable. I enjoy drawing and painting animals in an illustrative way!

Kalan | Art Assistant

Favorite Artist:

A few of my favorite artists include Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, and Daniel Micheal Diaz. Rembrandt had so much control over his pen and ink that it is ridiculously masterful, while da Vinci’s studies are evidence of his absolute genius. Daniel Martin Diaz is a contemporary artist I discovered a couple of years ago who has a fascinating take on connecting religious imagery and esoteric symbology to scientific and mathematical imagery and functions.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

As a mixed media artist, I enjoy a variety of mediums. I fell in love with Nupastel and charcoal in college. Their ability to push and pull a subject in and out of shape in an image is unmatched. Currently, I’m enjoying playing with watercolor, pen and ink, and white charcoal, as my current mediums of choice. Working with recognizable subjects makes playing with style and abstraction a whole lot of fun. I tend to stick to organic life ( be it plants, animals, or the human figure) because life is so incredibly interesting, and natural for people to connect with it.

Nicole | Instructor

Favorite Artist:

Rene Magritte because of his mind-bending, thought-provoking artworks that challenge perception and reality. His work makes you questions what you see, think, and believe about the world around you.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

Watercolor is my favorite medium. It creates beautiful, glowing effects that other mediums can’t easily replicate. The fluid nature of watercolor allows for happy accidents and spontaneous creativity.

Campbell | Art Assistant

Favorite Artist:

Van Gogh, Canaletto, and Monet. I admire Van Gogh for his expressive, impressionist style; Canaletto for his incredible attention to detail and masterful use of light; and Monet for his unique approach and bold, vibrant use of color.

Favorite Medium/Subject:

Acrylics are my favorite medium because they are so versatile and easy to use. I’m especially drawn to painting landscapes – particularly of the Scottish Highlands. I love experimenting with different lighting and color techniques.
